Obverse description Central quartered coat of arms bearing the heraldic devices of the Gonzaga dynasty, with a small inescutcheon at center. Above the shield, a miniature representation of Mount Olympus surmounted by a ducal crown. The arms are rendered in fine hammered relief typical of Renaissance Italian gold coinage. The peripheral legend runs continuously around the shield in Roman capitals. The overall composition reflects the courtly Renaissance artistic conventions of mid-sixteenth century Mantua.
