The 'Pada' sceats take their name from a runic inscription that has never been satisfactorily explained — whether a moneyer's name, a place, or something else entirely remains unresolved. Type III sits within the broader 'primary phase' of English sceat production, a period when Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were still working out the practicalities of a silver penny-weight coinage without Roman infrastructure to lean on.
