Eanbald I became Archbishop of York in 778, consecrated personally by the pope during a rare English ecclesiastical visit to Rome. His brief tenure coincided almost exactly with Æthelred I's first reign — Æthelred was expelled from Northumbria in 779, which almost certainly terminated this joint issue after a matter of months. The combination of an archbishop deposed king makes this one of the shortest-lived minting arrangements in Anglo-Saxon numismatics.
