Aanvullende informatie

Æthelred I's grip on Northumbria was anything but stable — he was driven from the throne twice, restored twice, and ultimately murdered by his own nobles in 796. The sceats struck during his second reign (789–796) emerged from a kingdom in almost continuous political convulsion, with aristocratic factions assassinating kings at a pace that left the Northumbrian church scandalized enough to draw comment from Alcuin himself.

Northumbrian sceats of this period were already debasing steadily toward the later styca coinage, though silver issues like this one predate the full collapse into base alloy.
