Frisian sceats circulated across the North Sea trading network at a time when Dorestad — the emporium on the Rhine — was arguably the busiest commercial hub in northern Europe. These coins moved through the hands of merchants dealing in Rhenish wine, Frankish glass, and English wool long before any formal monetary authority had reason to care about standardization. The type referenced by Gannon 38 belongs to the so-called "porcupine" series, whose production was decentralized enough that no single mint can be assigned with confidence.
