The characters read 大法國之安南當二, indicating French Annam with a denomination of two cash. The square hole is framed by a raised square border, and the surrounding field is otherwise plain. The calligraphic style of the characters closely follows the conventions of contemporaneous Annamese cash coinage, deliberately evoking local monetary tradition within a French colonial context.
