Reverse description The reverse displays four groups of Chinese characters disposed around the central square perforation, one group to each side, following the traditional arrangement of Vietnamese and Chinese cash coins. The characters read 大法國之安南 當二, indicating French Annam with a denomination of two cash. The square hole is framed by a raised square border, and the surrounding field is otherwise plain. The calligraphic style of the characters closely follows the conventions of contemporaneous Annamese cash coinage, deliberately evoking local monetary tradition within a French colonial context.
