The 1887 zinc sapeque patterns were struck in Paris as the French colonial administration worked to impose a unified coinage across Indochina — a monetary project complicated by the region's deeply entrenched tradition of Chinese cast cash coins, which local populations trusted and merchants had used for centuries. Displacing that system proved far harder than minting a replacement.
Zinc was chosen for its low cost, but the metal corrodes aggressively in tropical humidity, which is precisely why surviving examples in collectible condition are thin on the ground.
