| 正面描述 | Bare-headed effigy of King Victor Emmanuel II facing right, with naturalistically rendered hair and a prominent beard, depicted in high relief against a plain field. The portrait is rendered in a robust, realistic style characteristic of mid-19th century Sardinian coinage. The circular legend VITTORIO EMANUELE II arcs around the periphery, distributed evenly on both sides of the bust. |

A pattern or trial piece — "saggio" meaning essay or test strike — produced as Sardinian authorities explored new alloys ahead of Italian unification. Copper-nickel was an unusual choice for Italian coinage at this moment; Switzerland had adopted it in 1850, but the material remained largely experimental in the peninsula. Within a year of this strike, the Kingdom of Sardinia ceased to exist as a distinct entity, absorbed into the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Italy in March 1861.
