Obverse description Central crowned Portuguese royal arms shield, displaying the five quinas (escutcheons bearing five bezants each) arranged in a cross pattern, surrounded by a bordure of castles, all beneath a royal crown of arched form. The mint marks 'P' and 'O' flank the shield at either side within the field. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the royal legend distributed around the periphery in Latin characters.
