Obverse description Central device depicting the São Tomé emblem: a stylized palm tree or feathered crown above a globular or latticed cross symbol, rendered in a bold, primitive hammered style. The mint mark 'D' and 'O' appear flanking the central device in the field, denoting the Dio (Diu) mint. The coin is bordered by a beaded or granulated rim characteristic of Portuguese Indian hammered gold coinage of the early 18th century.

Reverse description Central design featuring a large stylized cross of the Order of Christ (Cruz de Cristo) with ornate, splayed arms, rendered in the bold hammered tradition of Portuguese India. The date 1717 is divided into two parts, with '17' appearing in the upper quarters and '17' in the lower quarters flanking the cross. A beaded border encircles the entire design, consistent with the hammered gold coinage produced at the Diu mint under João V.
