A tortoise is shown ascending the trunk of the palm, illustrating the emblem's impresa meaning — slow but determined progress. The date 1566 appears in the lower field, divided by the base of the tree. A thistle plant grows at the foot of the palm on the left, further emphasising the Scottish heraldic identity. The surrounding Latin legend, derived from Psalm 68, runs within a beaded border and is divided by a cross pattée at the top. |
