The shield is flanked on either side by thistle sprigs, symbols of Scotland, with an additional crowned thistle countermark visible to the right of the shield, applied at the 1578 revaluation. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the bilingual regal legend running in the outer border. The overall design is executed in the bold, irregular style characteristic of Scottish hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. |
