| Obverse lettering | · MARIA · ET · HENRICVS · DEI · GRA · R · ET · R · SCOTORVM · (Translation: Mary and Henry, by the Grace of God, Queen and King of Scots) |
| Reverse description | Central device depicts a tall crowned palm tree rising from the ground, its fronds spreading symmetrically to either side beneath a royal crown, symbolising strength and endurance. A tortoise is shown ascending the trunk of the palm, a device derived from the personal impresa of Mary Queen of Scots conveying the motto of perseverance. The legend DAT GLORIA VIRES (Glory gives strength) appears in the field across the lower portion of the tree, with the date 1565 struck below in large Roman-style numerals. The outer circumferential legend, partially legible, contains the Biblical citation EXVRGAT DEVS ET DISSIPENT INIMICI EIVS (Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered), separated by a thistle ornament at the top. |
