(Translation: James the Sixth, by the Grace of God, King of Scots)
Reverse description Central field features a long upright sword in pale, flanked on either side by the date 1570 split across the field, with the denomination mark 'X' appearing in the upper right. A small crowned thistle shield countermark, applied during the recoinage of 1578, is punched into the lower left field. The reverse legend, expressing the motto of personal accountability, runs between beaded borders around the entire circumference of the coin.
