| Obverse description | The central field displays the crowned royal arms of Scotland within a shield, flanked on the left by a crowned initial 'I' and on the right by a crowned 'R', denoting the royal cypher of Iacobus Rex. The heraldic composition is rendered in the bold, somewhat irregular style characteristic of Scottish hammered coinage of the period. The circumferential legend runs around the entire coin in Latin, separated by pellet stops. The overall design reflects the conventions of mid-sixteenth century Scottish regal coinage under James VI's first coinage issue. |
