Casimir III — the only Polish king to earn the epithet "the Great" — inherited a kingdom described by contemporaries as receiving it in wood and leaving it in stone. His monetary reform was part of that rebuilding: the Lwów mint was established after he incorporated Red Ruthenia (Galicia) into the Polish crown in 1349, making these deniers among the earliest coins struck at what is now Lviv, Ukraine. The range of Kop# varieties reflects ongoing die study of a type that circulated heavily and survives mostly in poor condition.
