½ Rupiah Baru (New Rupiah)

The "Rupiah Baru" designation marks this note's role in Indonesia's first independent currency reform, issued as the new republic worked to displace the colonial NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) currency that Dutch forces had continued circulating during the independence struggle. Half-rupiah denominations at this level were essential for everyday transactions in an economy where coinage supply had badly broken down.
