| Obverse description | Hammered silver flan bearing a multi-line Persian inscription in bold Nasta'liq calligraphy, arranged in two registers divided by a horizontal decorative rule. The legend, rendered in deeply struck relief against a stippled and floral-patterned field, reads a royal proclamation attributing the coinage to Shahrukh Shah, styled as 'Sahib-Qiran' and 'Kalb-Sultan of Khorasan,' with the regnal date AH 1187 appearing in the lower register. The field is filled with characteristic dotted rosette ornaments typical of late Afsharid die engraving, lending the surface a richly textured aesthetic. Shahrukh, blind grandson of Nadir Shah, ruled Khorasan as a vassal — sometimes of the Durranis, sometimes of the Zands — throughout this decade, making the political authority behind any given Mashhad strike genuinely ambiguous. The Type E classification distinguishes a specific calligraphic arrangement of the mint and regnal formulae that numismatists use to sequence his otherwise poorly-documented issues. Mashhad's religious prestige as the shrine city of Imam Reza gave Shahrukh a symbolic foothold that his military position alone never could have sustained.
