The Sagar mint operated under Maratha authority during a period of intense contest with the East India Company over central Indian territories. Following the Second Anglo-Maratha War and the Treaty of Deogaon in 1803, Company influence over the region expanded sharply, and several Maratha mints either ceased operation or came under indirect British supervision. That Sagar continued striking through 1809 places its later issues in genuinely uncertain political circumstances — it is not always clear under whose effective authority the dies were cut.
