Isma'il III was installed as shah in 1750 by the Zand chief Karim Khan, who had no interest in ruling as king himself — at least not yet. The arrangement was transparent to everyone: Isma'il provided dynastic legitimacy while Karim Khan held all real power as vakil, or regent. When Karim Khan finally dispensed with the fiction in 1760, Isma'il was deposed and the Safavid line effectively ended as a political force.
Rasht, on the Caspian littoral, remained one of the more active provincial mints during this period of fragmented authority. Coins struck there under Isma'il III carry the weight of a dynasty already hollow at the center.
