| Beschrijving keerzijde | A detailed depiction of the Borodino commemorative obelisk-chapel occupies the central field, shown in full elevation rising from a stepped Neo-Gothic base with arched niches and ornamental details. The tall tapered obelisk shaft is surmounted by a faceted onion-shaped finial topped by a cross, faithfully reproducing the monument erected on the Borodino battlefield. The circumferential Cyrillic legend, separated by a toothed inner border, records the date of the battle and the inauguration of the monument. The denomination 1. РУБЛЬ appears in the exergue below the monument's base. |

Struck to mark the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, this ruble was issued alongside the dedication of the Column of Alexander I at the Borodino field monument in 1839 — an elaborate state ceremony attended by Nicholas I himself and some 120,000 troops in a grand military review. The coin was designed by sculptor Count Fyodor Tolstoy, who spent years producing medallic work commemorating the Napoleonic campaigns.
Bitkin 895 is the standard business strike; a small number of proof-quality specimens were produced for presentation purposes and command a substantial premium. The .868 fine silver alloy was consistent with Russian coinage practice of the period, though the weight places this squarely in the commemorative rather than circulating ruble specification.
