Obverse description A crowned ruler standing facing on board a sailing ship, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield bearing the royal coat of arms in his left. The ship's rigging is elaborately rendered, and a flag displaying a gothic letter 'E' appears on the hindermost stern. The composition closely follows the English rose noble type of Edward III or IV, here restruck by the city of Gorinchem. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend running between two concentric circles of beading.
