| Obverse description | Full-length crowned figure of King Jean II standing facing within an ornate Gothic architectural canopy, rendered in high relief. The king is robed in a fleur-de-lis-strewn mantle and holds a sceptre surmounted by a fleur-de-lis in his right hand, while his left hand rests upon his chest. The canopy features elaborate pinnacles and traceried columns flanking the royal effigy on either side. A beaded inner border separates the central field from the circumferential Latin legend reading IOH'ES: DEI: GRA - FRANCORV': REX (Johannes, by the grace of God, King of the Franks), interrupted by a small crown at the top. |
