The Monetary Union of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden — the three original forest cantons of the Swiss Confederation — issued this Rössler as part of a shared coinage arrangement that predates the more formalized Swiss monetary structures by centuries. The union itself was a practical response to the chronic shortage of small silver currency circulating through the alpine passes, where trade with Lombardy and the Rhineland created constant demand for reliable fractional coin.
The HMZ reference covers a span of over four decades, during which die workmanship varied considerably between minting sessions.
