| Obverse description | A crowned king stands full-length aboard a sailing vessel, holding a sword in his right hand and a quartered shield of arms in his left; a flag bearing a gothic 'E' appears at the hind stern. The design is executed in the elaborate Gothic hammered style characteristic of English nobles of the Edwardian period. A Groningen civic countermark in the form of an eagle — the arms of the city — has been applied to the obverse field, likely during the revalidation of foreign gold coinage circulating in the Dutch provinces circa 1590. The surrounding legend in Gothic Latin lettering runs within the beaded inner border of the characteristic lobate, multi-cusped coin form. |

| Reverse description | A large radiant sun rises from the center of a floriated cross pattée, its rays extending into all quadrants of the field in the characteristic 'rose noble' sunburst design. In each quarter formed by the arms of the cross, a crowned leopard passant guardant (a heraldic lion of England) is depicted. The cross terminals are ornamented with fleur-de-lis finials, and the entire design is enclosed within the multi-lobed cusped border typical of hammered English gold nobles. The surrounding Latin legend is divided by ornamental stops and runs along the outer edge within a beaded border. |
