212 BC marks the Roman sack of Syracuse — the city fell after a two-year siege conducted by Marcus Claudius Marcellus, delayed famously by Archimedes' war machines. Bronze coinage continued briefly under Roman occupation as the city transitioned from a Hellenistic kingdom to a provincial subject, and these small issues represent that administratively awkward interval when the old civic mint was still functioning under new military authority.
