Obverse description Within a beaded border, the Portuguese royal coat of arms is depicted centrally, showing the characteristic escutcheon with castles and quinas. Flanking the arms to the left and right are the denomination initials 'I' and 'B', standing for '1 Bazaruco'. The design is crudely but recognizably rendered in the hammered style typical of Portuguese colonial copper coinage produced at the Damão mint. The overall field shows characteristic irregular flan surfaces consistent with locally struck bazaruco issues of the early seventeenth century.
