Gustav IV Adolf's coronation in 1800 came four years after he actually assumed the throne — he had been king since 1796, but the formal coronation was delayed, partly due to the turbulent political atmosphere following the assassination of his father Gustav III in 1792. The commemorative issue for the occasion was struck at Stockholm and is catalogued under a relatively small number of known varieties. Gustav IV would be deposed nine years later following Sweden's disastrous loss of Finland to Russia, making anything tied to his reign carry an implicit footnote of dynastic collapse.
