| Obverse description | Armored bust of William I, Prince of Orange (William the Silent), facing right, rendered in high relief consistent with the piedfort format. The figure is depicted in three-quarter view wearing elaborately engraved plate armor with a ruff collar and a sword held diagonally across the body. The portrait is finely detailed with a bearded face and curling hair, characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch die craftsmanship. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular Latin legend interrupted by ornamental cross stops reading VIGILATE DEO CONFIDENTES and the date 1583. |
