The so-called Leicesterrijksdaalder takes its name from Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, whose disastrous tenure as governor-general of the Dutch Republic ended in 1587 — yet the coin type bearing associations with his period of authority continued striking well into the 1590s. Leicester had imposed sweeping trade restrictions that alienated the merchant class of Holland almost immediately, and his departure left the provincial states in a considerably more assertive mood about controlling their own monetary affairs.
The 1595 issue from Holland and West Friesland falls within a transitional period when the seven provinces were consolidating coinage policy ahead of more standardized output in the following decade. Ver#46.3 distinguishes this from closely related dies circulating under the same broad type.
