Gelderland's adoption of the rijksdaalder type in the 1590s came during one of the most turbulent stretches of the Dutch Revolt, with the province only recently consolidated under States authority after decades of contested Habsburg control. The 1594 issue predates the formal Union coinage standardization efforts that would occupy the States-General through the following decade, making provincial types like this one a practical stopgap for a republic conducting war on credit.
The Voogt 90 attribution places this among the earlier die marriages for the Gelderland helmeted type. Provincial silver of this period frequently shows adjustment marks from the weighmaster — the .885 fineness was mandated but enforcement varied considerably by mint.
