The 'Offermark' nickname derives from the coin's association with church offering practices in Denmark, where this denomination was commonly deposited in collection plates — a function that kept many examples in relatively protected environments rather than hard daily circulation. Frederik VI had assumed full royal authority only in 1808 after years as crown prince regent, his father Christian VII having been incapacitated by mental illness since the 1780s.
The billon composition reflects Denmark's strained finances during the Napoleonic Wars, when the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807 and the subsequent seizure of the Danish fleet pushed the kingdom into an alliance with France and a sharp monetary deterioration.
