Obverse description Duke Philip the Good depicted in full armor astride a charging destrier galloping to the right, his right arm raised and brandishing a sword in a commanding gesture. The horse is rendered in dynamic profile with detailed caparison and harness, the duke wearing a visored helmet and plate armor. The ducal title abbreviation appears in the exergue below the horse. A circular Gothic legend in uncial Latin characters runs within the beaded border, naming the issuer as Duke of Burgundy, Brabant, and Limburg. The composition conveys the martial authority of the Burgundian court in the finest tradition of late medieval hammered gold coinage.
