The horse is depicted in full stride, and a small lion device appears at the terminus of the encircling legend. The design closely follows the French franc à cheval tradition, rendered in the bold, linear style characteristic of mid-14th-century hammered gold coinage. The legend, incised in Gothic lettering, identifies the issuer as William, by God's grace Duke, Count, and Lord of Holland. |
