| Obverse description | At center, a heraldic Union shield with horizontal lines in the chief and vertical pale lines in the body, flanked on either side by crossed arrows and an ornate foliate wreath tied at the base. Above the shield, a scrolled banner bears the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST in raised Latin lettering, with 'WE' appearing on a central tab of the scroll. The date 1864 is positioned prominently in the lower field below the wreath. A fine dentillated border encircles the entire design. |
