The 1929 Yuan was issued to commemorate the state funeral and official interment of Sun Yat-sen at the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing — a ceremony that took place in June of that year, nearly four years after his death in Beijing. The Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek used the occasion as a deliberate act of political consolidation, binding the new republic's legitimacy to Sun's revolutionary image.
This piece is a replica. The original was struck in silver; the copper-nickel-iron composition here is the tell, along with the substantial weight discrepancy from genuine examples.
