Li Yuanhong served as the first President of the Republic of China under the 1912 provisional constitution, having risen to prominence almost accidentally — a mid-ranking Qing military officer in Wuchang who was reportedly dragged from hiding by revolutionary soldiers and thrust into command the night the 1911 uprising broke out. The coins issued in his name are among the more politically loaded of the early Republican dollar series, minted during a period when presidential portraiture on coinage was itself a contested act.
