Jovian's reign lasted just eight months, ending when he was found dead in his tent at Dadastana in February 364 — almost certainly from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a brazier in a poorly ventilated room, though assassination was immediately suspected. He had already negotiated the humiliating Peace of Nisibis with Shapur II, surrendering five provinces and the strategically vital fortress city itself to end the disastrous campaign that killed Julian. Coinage from his reign is scarce simply because there was so little time to produce it.
