| 表面の説明 | Large Gothic capital letter 'R', serving as the royal initial of King Sebastião I, prominently centered in the field. A decorative crown surmounts the letter, rendered in relief consistent with hammered coinage of the period. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of mid-16th century Portuguese copper issues. The overall design is stark and heraldic, with the crowned 'R' monogram occupying virtually the entire obverse field. |

Sebastião I became king of Portugal at three years of age in 1557, with his grandmother Catherine of Austria serving as regent until 1562 and then Cardinal Henrique until 1568. These copper reais were struck throughout that long regency period and into his personal rule — a reign defined less by domestic coinage policy than by the disastrous obsession with a crusade in North Africa that ultimately consumed him at Alcácer Quibir in 1578, leaving Portugal without an heir and setting the stage for the Iberian Union under Philip II.
The Gomes reference spans four distinct varieties across this single type, differentiated primarily by die workmanship and mint officina markers.
