| Obverse description | Central field displays a large crowned Gothic monogram 'IhIS' (or 'IHIS'), representing the name of Christ, set within a decorative inner circle flanked by two heraldic supporters. The monogram is surmounted by an ornate crown rendered in high relief. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding legend. The circumferential inscription in uncial Latin reads: ADIVTORIVM NOSTRVM QVI FECIT ET CELVM ET TERA, referencing Psalm 123, and is enclosed between an outer beaded border and an inner linear circle. |

Issued during the interregnum that followed the death of Fernando I, this coin circulated under the regency of Leonor Teles and then, after the populist revolt of 1383, under João of Avis — whose title "Regedor e Defensor do Reino" reflects precisely his constitutional ambiguity before the Cortes of Coimbra formally declared him king in 1385. He held authority without the crown, and the coinage had to say so plainly.
