Reverse description Central device consists of a cross formed by four Portuguese royal shields arranged in cruciform pattern, each shield bearing the characteristic quinas (five bezants in saltire) of the Kingdom of Portugal. The shields at the cardinal points are set within a quatrefoil composition, with the arms of the cross extending to the beaded border. The circumferential legend in Gothic majuscules reads +F D G REX PORTVGALIE E ALGARBII, identifying Fernando I as King of Portugal and the Algarve, separated by decorative stops and enclosed between two beaded circles.
