Obverse description Central spade-shaped cartouche bearing the quartered arms of Bavaria-Palatinate, dividing the four digits of the date into two pairs within the field. The heraldic shield is set within an ornamental cartouche typical of late sixteenth-century Low Countries coinage. The surrounding legend, rendered in Latin, identifies the issuer by his full title. The overall design reflects the high Gothic-Renaissance engraving style prevalent in the Prince-Bishopric of Liege during this period.
