Reverse description Quartered royal shield of Castile and Leon displayed within a quadrilobe frame, with castles (for Castile) in the first and fourth quarters and rampant lions (for Leon) in the second and third quarters, all struck in bold relief typical of Gothic hammered coinage. The quarters are separated by a plain cross, with a small mint letter visible at the top of the cross. The surrounding Latin legend naming the issuing monarch runs along the outer border, divided by the quadrilobe frame, struck in Gothic lettering on an irregular flan with a beaded inner border separating the legend from the central device.
