Enrique II came to the Castilian throne not through inheritance but through civil war, killing his half-brother Pedro I at Montiel in 1369 — the same year this issue began. The new dynasty needed money fast, both to pay the mercenary companies that had won him the crown and to establish legitimacy through visible, circulating coinage. Billon reales of this type were struck at Segovia as part of that immediate post-usurpation minting push.
