Additional information

Enrique II's early reales were struck in the immediate aftermath of his seizure of the Castilian throne from his half-brother Pedro I, whom he killed personally at Montiel in March 1369. The coinage was part of a broader effort to legitimize a reign that began in usurpation — Enrique had already been minting as a pretender since 1366, so this post-victory issue carried real political urgency. Examples lacking a mint mark present an ongoing attribution problem; several Castilian workshops operated concurrently in these years, and the absence of a mark does not necessarily indicate a single source.
