Obverse description Central field depicts a steam locomotive with carriages traveling to the right, emitting smoke, set in a landscape with Andean mountains in the background, a church and buildings to the right, and llamas in the foreground. The surrounding legend arcs along the upper border naming the railroad line and section, with the chief engineer and contractor named along the lower border. The engraver's signature C.F. Bryant is visible in the lower central field.

Reverse description The reverse is entirely covered in relief text arranged in concentric and horizontal lines filling the field, recording the names and titles of the officiating archbishop, the president of the republic, and the five cabinet ministers present at the inauguration ceremony on January 1st, 1870. A dotted decorative border frames the inscriptions, with ornamental stars at intervals.
