The quinarius was by 73 AD an almost archaic denomination — rarely struck, rarely circulated, its purpose more ceremonial than practical. Vespasian's revival of the type was deliberate, part of a broader effort to project Roman military prestige following the Judaean war and the consolidation of Flavian power after the chaos of 69 AD. The denomination had seen almost no production under the Julio-Claudians for decades.
RIC II.1 508 is among the scarcer Vespasianic issues precisely because quinarii were struck in such limited numbers relative to the denarius. Most examples that survive do so in notably better condition than comparable denarii, suggesting limited release into general commerce.
