The quinarius had been a largely dormant denomination for over a century before occasional imperial issues revived it, almost always in limited quantities and for reasons still debated — donatives, ceremonial distribution, and military pay supplements have all been proposed. Trajan's early issues, struck in the first two years of his reign while he was still consolidating position after Nerva's adoption, fit this pattern of infrequent, purposeful production rather than routine coinage.
RIC II 24 is among the scarcer of Trajan's quinarii. The COS II dating tightly constrains it to 98–99 AD, before his third consulship.
