Trajan's quinarius coinage is rare in any form — the denomination had been largely abandoned by the late Republic and saw only sporadic revival under the emperors, making issues from any reign numerically thin. The COS III dating anchors this piece to 100 AD, the year the Senate conferred on Trajan the title Optimus, though that honorific does not yet appear in this legend, placing it in a narrow window before that award was formally adopted in his titulature.
